Why You should Hire Veterans
Why You Should Hire Veterans?
By Harold F. Fuentes
When the veterans come back from war, they usually need to find jobs that will help them cater for the day-to-day needs. But it can be a challenge for these young men and women to get jobs in the corporate world. Over the past few years, statistics have indicated that there are a lot of young veterans who are unemployed, something which caused the White House to start an initiative that is focused at encouraging businesses to be hiring veterans and also make the department of labor to come up with toolkits for the employers for hiring the vets.
But why should you hire vets? There are a number of benefits that your company will get when you hire veterans. Due their life skills, experiences as well as training, the veterans will make outstanding employees for your company. With this kind of maturity that the veterans have, when it is translated into your business then you are bound to see a lot of success. When these men and women are on active duty, they are usually faced with different situations that need them to be so adaptable. Those problems skills that they learn in the military can be applied to any job in the civilian workforce be it customer service, data analysis support or decision-making.
Vets are amazing when it comes to teamwork skills compared to their civilian counterparts, and they are usually more loyal. If you consider hiring vets to work for you, the level of commitment that they will give to your organization or company and the work they are doing will be very high, and for that matter their service can easily translate into a longer tenure.
But even with those amazing skills that veterans have, there are still hold ups from some companies and organizations on employing them. Some employers think that it will be difficult for the vets to translate their skills in their businesses, and also that the veterans may redeploy and neglect their job for a very long period of time. Other business leaders are more concerned with the mental health of the vets. They think that the returning soldiers might be having post-traumatic stress disorders which might affect the productivity of their businesses.
The hold ups mentioned above may not be always true in many cases because many veterans have shown their ability to handle their jobs in the civilian world absolutely well. But in order to get the best services from them, it is crucial that you help them transition successfully. After you hire a veteran, you will need to give them adequate support as well as training that will assist them transition and adapt to the corporate world. Note that there is a big difference between the military culture and the culture in the corporate world. The military usually has a chain of command and structure that is very clear and the duties to be performed are well-defined. So you will need to help the vets that you have employed understand the office culture, their duties and what you expect from them.

Veteran Employment Assistance Programs
Veteran Employment Assistance Programs
By Harold F. Fuentes
Every year, the number of veterans who return home increases and each time these heroes return to their motherland, it is expected that there are a few who succumb to unemployment waiting for the government's monthly compensation. However, a lot of veterans seek employment though it is hard for many of them to cope up with the reality of life. They still seek veteran employment to integrate themselves back to the society as soon as possible. Their effort to live a normal civilian life is of course highly supported by the government and nonprofit organizations that have set up programs to help them look for veteran employment.
So how do these veteran employment assistance organizations work? What are their purposes, types and what kind of help that veterans can expect from these organizations?
The Purpose
It is important to remember that a lot of veterans that have been discharged for military service do not have civilian life working experience. The subject of integrating back into the society would be hard for them. For those veterans that do not have high managerial skills, veteran employment may seem unattainable. That is why veteran employment assistance programs have been established all throughout the country to help them.
The Organizations
There are actually different veteran employment assistance programs and organizations available. Here is a short list of some of the programs:
-The government's own Department of Veterans Affair offers a program that focuses on veterans who were disabled while serving in the military. The VA offers rehabilitation, vocational training and employment assistance for these veterans.
-Another program offered by the Department of Labor focuses on providing workshop on the topic of employment and training services for those newly tenured or retired military personnel. This program is also available for the veteran's wives and husbands.
-Private institutions such as the International Brotherhood of Teamsters offer veteran employment in the construction industry.
-The Department of Education has also teamed up with the Department of Defense to implement the program called Troops to Teachers which focuses on inviting veterans to teach different school subjects.
The Benefits
It is undeniable that even if these veterans are heroes of modern time, they still are discriminated during employment or re-employment. That is why state, federal and privately funded programs have become rampant today. This is to ensure that veteran employment assistance is provided everywhere and anytime for those in need of it.
Most of these programs work with veterans who want to change and improve their conditions. A lot of them have online websites where information about employment, workshops and career fairs are constantly updated. It is really easy to find them online. All a veteran needs to do is input some keywords such as veterans' programs or veteran employment on the search box and a number of reliable websites are going to pop up.
For those veterans that have a service-related disability, the amount of pension is enough to live comfortably. However, it is still advisable to look for veteran employment programs that could help them find a job since this will help them cope up with life and also increase their self-esteem. It is important for these heroes to feel that they are needed, and one way to ensure that is by looking for a job.
